Meet our Featured Handmade Artisan, Molly Wagner of My Artsy Baby...
How did you get into design?
I was always a crafty kid, and my parents got me oil painting lessons when I was 10. I've held onto what I learned when I was young and built upon it over the years. Other than that, I've never had any formal art or design training. Most everything that I've learned has been self-taught.
What motivated you to start your own handmade business?
I have always given my paintings as gifts to friends at baby showers or for birthdays. When I was pregnant with my 5th baby in 2008, I was browsing Etsy trying to find unique pieces for him. I realized that it could be a great hobby and that maybe I could make a little extra money if I sold my paintings there as well. What started as a small hobby has grown and become nearly a full time job for me. Just this past year I started my own blog, Just a Little Creativity, and have been able to promote my Etsy shop there as well as give advice and tips for other new artists thinking of opening their own shops as well.
What is your favorite item you are currently selling?
My art is made to order, and each piece is custom. I design each and every one of my pieces myself, but tend to sell a lot repeat designs.
My owl growth charts are probably my current favorites. However, I like when I get an order for something completely new that I haven't done yet, it gives me a challenge and opens a door for another new design favorite.
Do you have a favorite design, website, or other handmade
seller you get inspiration from?
I follow about a bazillion blogs. Everything from parenting to DIY and design blogs. I'm also currently addicted to Pinterest, it's kind of a one stop shop for any type of instant inspiration you might need.
Thank you Molly for sharing! You can find Molly's Etsy Shop in our Handmade Market too!
